“Begin at once to live and count each separate day as a separate life.” Lucius Annaeus Seneca

What a thought! Too often we think of our days as unlimited. In reality, days are commodities and we don’t know how many were in the barrel at the start. Don’t waste them.

Living Life

In a recent interview, actor Dustin Hoffman used the analogy of Swiss cheese to describe his view on life. I thought it was a good one. The holes in Swiss cheese represent the days you didn’t live as fully as you could. How many holes are in yours?

Here are a few simple steps to help you live each day to the fullest.

  • Live in and for the moment.  Focus on what is, not what was or what could be. Buddhists call this “mindfulness”.
  • “Be curious, not judgmental.” Walt Whitman
  • Rediscover the world. Pay attention to all your senses – sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. Remember the fascination you had as a child exploring each new thing? Reclaim that feeling.
  • Breathe. When you find your mind wandering, return your focus by taking a deep breath through your nose, and out through your mouth. Hear the air enter your body as your chest swells.
  • Be active. Engage with the world. Minimize passive activities like TV, even reading.
